Yesterday I had the chance of attending a day long CPD organised by PDST for language teachers. There were many languages represented by over 200 teachers.
There was a real buzz in the room all day! DuoLingo was mentioned yesterday for independent learning. It reminded me that I started using DuoLingo for school at the beginning of the year with the 3 years which have iPads in my school. Setting up Duo Lingo was quite easy. You need to create classrooms which are your classes. So for example, I have French 1a4 etc... Once you have created your classes, you click the invite students button. This will give you a link you can give to students to join the class. If a student is already on duo lingo, they can go in their own settings and click the share. They then enter the name of the class and your email address. If they have it as an app, ask them to stick to one. We found it difficult to link an account created on the website and the app one. The first 2 weeks, I gave time in class for Duo Lingo practice. I also have the students on Duo Lingo when I am delayed at beginning of class or if I need to step out for whatever reasons. It has now become a habit. For about the 1st month, every Friday, I would check the review emails I got from Duo Lingo and give little rewards to students. This was a great motivator. I now do it about every two weeks. The benefit from a language point of you is that they practice writing, listening, reading and speaking. The speaking part can be skipped (if you are in a computer room for example) but I really encourage it. I am told by parents that they are doing it at home. I have seen students who would barely participate in class making great progress and transferring some of it in class. So I would encourage you to have a go! My advice: Use your school email address If your student already has an account, use it! Get students to bring earphones in class After last year's success, we are happy to organise the Racontez-moi une histoire ! workshop and competition. Places are limited so please read the rules and how to register carefully. If you have any questions, please email: ftawexford(a)gmail.com.
